Check four things before you buy. First, the contract: is the source code verified, can the owner mint unlimited new tokens, freeze your wallet, or block selling (a honeypot)? Second, liquidity: is there enough real trading volume to sell without crashing the price, and is the liquidity pool locked? Third, holder distribution: if one wallet holds 40% or more of supply, that wallet can exit and take the price with it. Fourth, the team and track record: an anonymous team with no history and no public code is a meaningful risk. A honeypot is a token you can buy but cannot sell. The contract contains code that blocks selling for everyone except the creator's own wallets, so the price chart looks like it is rising while nobody can actually take profit. It is one of the few things in crypto that can be detected mechanically, by simulating a sell against the contract before you trade. KoinLens flags a detected honeypot as the single most severe warning on a coin's report.

A rug pull is when a project's team withdraws the liquidity backing a token, leaving holders with something they cannot sell. It cannot be predicted with certainty, but the conditions that make it possible are visible in advance: unlocked liquidity, ownership never renounced, a mint function, and supply concentrated in a handful of wallets. A coin with all four is structurally rug-pullable, whether or not anyone ever pulls it.

No, and confusing the two is the most expensive mistake in crypto. A project can have a named team, audited contracts, major exchange listings and zero red flags, and still have lost 90% or more of its holders' money. Legitimacy and investment performance are separate questions. Trust covers contract security, liquidity and lock status, holder concentration, developer activity, team transparency, tokenomics, volume quality, exchange listings and project age. Red flags such as a honeypot or a mint function are then subtracted from the total, and a coin down more than 90% from its peak is capped so no amount of good paperwork can present it as healthy.
